Internet Access

by Drew

Hello...first off, great site. You are providing a great service for those looking to try out this lifestyle. My question... I have the ability to run my business from a computer, as such, having access to the internet is very important..(not every day but at least 3 days a week). What has been your experience with this... I can imagine having difficulty getting internet access in most of the parks, and forest areas. Thanks!!

You are right. Public wifi is available in increasingly more places but it can be unreliable - in campgrounds the signal is sometimes week, especially if a lot of people are on it and, often you need to go to the clubhouse to pick up a signal. If you're running a business, you should also take into account that public wifi may not be secure enough for your needs.

Our solution was to buy a usb device (through Verizon) and we purhcase monthly pay-as-you-go top-ups. Because we can't use it at home (in Canada), we don't have a contract; however, that would be cheaper.

We chose Verizon because it has decent coverage even in many remote areas. Other providers may be cheaper but you should compare coverage. Some are only good in cities and densely populated areas. Even Verizon doesn't cover southern Utah - there is no company that does.

You might also look at satellite internet - more expensive equipment but may be worth the investment in the long run.
