Mileage reduction when towing with a 32 foot Class A with a big Ford gas engine.

Does it make financial sense to tow from Vancouver Island to Arizona, or even have the passenger drive the car, or does it make more sense to rent a vehicle when you need it once you get there. What kind of drop in mileage could I expect whilst towing? Any help appreciated.

Tow or Rent ???
by: Bud Corwin

We have been fulltimers for over 13 years. When we started out, we had a 33 foot Fleetwood Pace Arrow with a Ford 460 engine. I was towing a "99 Honda Accord 4 dr. I averaged around 8 miles per gallon. If we went somewhere without towing, I still got about 8 miles per gallon. We now have a 38 foot Fleetwood Excursion with a 330 Cat diesel pusher. I average right around 8.5 miles per gallon towing or not.

Hoping for input ....

Since we don't tow ourselves, I can't answer that. But hopefully we'll get some response here from those that do.
Since so many do tow, I would imagine it's cheaper than renting a car at your destination. A lot would depend on how long you plan to be down south.
