Since we never know where we'll be on a given day, it's difficult to plan a birthday while on the road. We both have March birthdays and this year was a "biggie" for Randy who turned sixty. However, because of our location, my birthday will stand out as the more memorable.
We were camped in Anza Borrego State Park with the temperatures becoming a little warmer than we preferred. Nearby, Agua Caliente, a county park, provided relief from the heat and my birthday turned into an unexpected "spa day." Being my birthday, Randy treated and it set him back a whole $5.00 (the per-vehicle day-use entry fee). The facilities including an indoor mineral spa, and two outdoor pools with varying temperatures were excellent - beyond expectaions. Being mid-week, we had the place almost to ourselves too!
A barbecue dinner followed back at the campground. The expensive bottle of wine (compliments of daughter, Laura) sitting beside the Great Value brand parmesan cheese, depicts us and our lifestyle perfectly, don't you agree?
A campfire jam session with new-found guitar-strumming friends provided a perfect end to the evening.
The next day, we moved to higher altitudes. We stopped at Lake Morena, a popular fishing lake, where two fishermen had just caught more trout than they could eat . They asked if we'd like a couple - so what could we do but help them out? We chatted as they cleaned the fish for us and, voila - another tasty (and free) dinner on the grill.
Here are photos of some of our campsites (all of them free) over the past week.
