Cell phone/data plan - local or from back home?

iHola! I've been reading about your adventures for over a year now and love your blog. This Costa Rica adventure is something my daughter and I have been dreaming of, so the nitty-gritty details are very much appreciated! Would you mind sharing a bit more detail on your cell phone plan? Did you get a pay-as-you-go from a Costa Rican phone company, or did you get a foreign data/cell package with your existing Canadian provider?

Kolbi

We purchased a sim card for our unlocked phone from Kolbi (the main provider here). They had a booth at the airport and people spoke good English. You can do it elsewhere but often need to have a bit of Spanish to communicate. Service is very cheap here. The sim card and one month service (incl 500 minutes, 2 gigs of data and I think 100 texts - maybe more) cost us $22.00 US. I've topped it up for another month at the local convenience store.
