Sales Tax in California

California requires one to pay sales tax on any vehicle purchased there, unless it is shipped out of state after the sale by a bonded carrier.

Marianne's Reply:Thanks. An option (as other readers have pointed out) that I think I should add to this web page is to arrange to have your RV delivered to the border. Some readers have done it and, sure, it costs a few hundred dollars (depending on the distance) and you may have to have the delivery notarized as well (another small fee) but, on an expensive purchase, it may be a lot less than the state sales tax would amount to.

Would I have to pay the California use tax if I had the owner drive me to the Nevada border to take delivery there?
